This beautiful cabin was in the mountains of Oakley and required snow removal multiple times during the course of the project to ensure the highest quality roof installation possible.
The roof was complex with angle changes and several detailed valleys. These advanced roofing conditions are important to pay attention to and execute correctly, as even simple mistakes can lead to roof leaks down the road. |
This picture shows multiple surfaces adjoin at the bottom of the valley. This is an important detail that must be executed correctly while installing ice shield and shingles to prevent repair issues down the road. In addition to the protective ice shield membrane, the customer will install heat coil on the roof at the bottom of the valley to keep the ice from forming in the winter months.
If ice is allowed to build up, it can force itself up from the gutters and under the shingles, shortening the length of the roof. It is important to install a roof to fit the climate needs in this area. An ice shield adds an extra layer of protection to your roof, as well as prevents ice dam build-up. |
These shingles are a Timberline Lifetime Shingle in the color Barkwood. It is a thicker shingle than the Timberline 30 year or Timberline 40 year archictectural shingles. The thickness of this shingle ensures a longer life and a superior aesthetic value. Another way we added to this cabin's aesthetic appeal is by painting the pipes and used painted valley metal.
Note that the ice shield extends up the chimney to keep out moisture. This is necessary in climates with extreme snow loads. The ice shield needs to be higher to accommodate slush and ice build up. |
Here is an example of an advanced roofing detail. Two valleys meet in a way that may cause ice to back up and cause future problems with the roof. To ensure protection, we installed a metal pan in this area to strengthen the roof and ensure protection. While this is extremely beneficial to the roof, it doesn't create a noticable difference to the look of this beautiful cabin.

You may use the most beautiful shingles available, but your roof will only be as good as the people who install it. It is important for your roofing company to know how to deal with variables like what you see in this photo.
There are valley and surface angle changes on this roof. This is a challenge to execute with W-valley metal (used here) because it is difficult to bend. If your roofing contractor knows how to successfully install in these conditions, your roof will be much more durable. Another important detail on this roof is the facia board that dives into the roof in the same proximity of the valley. Because a lot of water travels through this area, it is important that this penetration is sealed properly, or it will most definitely leak in the future. We were able to seal around the facia board successfully, keeping out any and all moisture. |
